WA drivers caught with a radar detector fitted to their car will face tough new penalties under a crackdown set to begin in a fortnight.

The new laws bring WA in line with the rest of Australia and will see drivers caught flouting the ban hit with a $1,200 on-the-spot infringement and seven demerit point penalty regardless of whether the device is operational or not.

It mean that during a double-demerit period a driver could lose their licence in one hit.

Truck drivers caught using the detectors will face a large $1,500 fine and the same demerit point penalty.

Police and Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts said WA drivers were being given notice to remove radar detectors from their vehicles before October 12.

“It’s taken Western Australia 20 years to catch up with the rest of the country, but I’m pleased we have at long last been able to ban radar detectors,” she said.

“We are deliberately giving people plenty of warning before these new penalties come into effect.

“If you’ve got one of these devices on your vehicle, then get rid of it.”

Speed remains the single biggest factor in death and serious injury crashes on WA roads.

The ban on radar detectors follows recent law changes that also banned laser jammers and electronic scramblers.

“These devices have always been about enabling people to speed without being caught and I’m really glad this Government is putting a stop to it,” Mrs Roberts said.
