Port Kennedy assault: Perth mum charged over alleged kidnapping of 17-year-old girl in a schedule two position

A Perth mum charged over the alleged kidnapping and assault of a 17-year-old girl is in a schedule two position — meaning she was already on bail for other serious offences — a Perth court has heard. The 35-year-old woman has been charged, as has her daughter, over the alleged kidnapping in Port Kennedy last weekend. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been hit with kidnapping, robbery and assault charges after the shocking incident was filmed and posted online, which showed the 17-year-old girl begging for help after she was allegedly assaulted and thrown in a car. Disturbing footage emerged of the moment the 17-year-old was allegedly bashed in Port Kennedy last Sunday, before a camera was shoved in her face as she was driven around in a car. On Friday afternoon, WA Police confirmed both a 16-year-old girl and a 35-year-old woman — whom The Sunday Times has confirmed are mother and daughter — had each been charged over the incident with one count each of deprivation of liberty, aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and aggravated robbery. The teen faced Perth Children’s Court on Friday, where she was refused bail. Her mother’s charges were briefly mentioned in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday. The 35-year-old woman did not appear in person for the court hearing, due to an apparent lack of staff and an unknown incident inside the Perth Watch House on Saturday morning. But a duty lawyer representing the woman in court asked for the three charges to be adjourned to Rockingham Magistrates Court on Monday, where she said the woman would be applying for schedule two bail. Schedule two bail applications typically involve an accused person having to show exceptional circumstances as to why bail should be granted. Such applications usually occur when a person is already on bail for a serious offence. No details about the Port Kennedy offence were revealed in court and the woman’s three charges were remanded to come before court again in two days’ time. Disturbing vision of the incident, seen by The Sunday Times, shows the 17-year-old girl being driven around in a vehicle with blood pouring down her face. “No, please, don’t take my stuff,” the girl can be heard screaming after she is grabbed by her hair and placed in the car. Before she is placed in the car, the girl is punched multiple times as she yells in fear. The 17-year-old, in another video, can be heard then pleading for the male driver of the car — who police say was forced to drive the teen around — to stop the vehicle as she was hit with a barrage of questions by backseat passengers. One of those questions is understood to be related to her phone password. The Sunday Times has been told the girl suffered serious bruising to her face. “At this time, it is believed the male driver of the vehicle drove the vehicle under duress and was not involved in the assault,” a police spokeswoman said on Thursday.
