Perth election results: Youngest ever mayor and pair of 18-year-olds fill council’s with ‘new energy’

The City of Perth’s youngest ever councillor is an unashamed fan of the city’s next Lord mayor - and her high praise appears reciprocated. Mayor-elect Bruce Reynolds said 18-year-old Ms Ma was a “fantastic” addition to the team, who would bring a fresh perspective and representation of a generation that was “very engaged with the future of the city”. “Having that mix of experience and new energy on council is exactly what Perth needs, and real diversity,” he said. The business law student is among a fresh crop of young decisionmakers set to make their mark within WA councils after being elected at the weekend. In Perth’s north, the City of Joondalup will be led by Daniel Kingston who at 32-years-old will become one of WA’s youngest ever mayors. He overcame a big field of contenders, including other current councillors and former Federal MP Ian Goodenough, who actually polled more first votes but was beaten on the distribution of preferences. Another 18-year-old, Balian Miller, has been voted in the City of Kwinana council. “It’s an incredible and humbling feeling to have been elected, especially as the youngest councillor in the City of Kwinana’s history at 18 years old,” he said. “The people of Kwinana have placed their trust in me to represent and serve them to the best of my ability, which is something I take very seriously.” Ms Ma told The West Australian she was still taking in the win, but was grateful for the support of everyone who believed in her. Making Perth safer, more inclusive and vibrant, especially at night, are also her goals. “Perth is full of potential, and I want to help build a city where everyone — no matter their age or background — feels safe, welcome, and proud to call home,” she said. “That means better lighting, more community activities, and safer public spaces. “I also want to strengthen youth and multicultural engagement through ongoing programs, not just one-off events. “To achieve this, I’ll work closely with community groups, local businesses, and other councillors to turn good ideas into practical action.”
