In this year’s NBL1 West season the Rockingham Flames have welcomed US import Devondrick Walker to the team.

The 29-year-old Dallas native has quickly cemented his spot in the league as the number one points scorer so far this season, with an impressive 28.75 point per game average.

This is Walker’s third time playing down under, having signed with the Perth Wildcats for 2017 but due to an injury early on in the season his time was cut short.

Returning in 2020, Walker signed with the South East Melbourne Phoenix for eight games, going on to play in the European league in Latvia before his return to Australia with the Rockingham Flames.

When the opportunity was presented to Walker to come back to Australia, he was more than happy and ready to compete in his first ever NBL1 West season.

“The league is better than I expected . . . players really come out and compete, they’ve done a really good job in the sense of expanding, I’m happy to be here,” Walker said.

“I can’t speak for everybody else in the league but I think we have an amazing bunch of guys and the coach and staff are great — they know what they are doing. Players come in (and) practice, we get ready to work and I couldn’t be happier with the bunch that we have.”

This year will mark Walker’s ninth year of professional basketball.

When asked if the Rockingham Flames had a chance to win the NBL1 West championships, he said he was “taking it one day at a time, working on things that I need to work on, getting better as a team”.

“Championships will be here sooner rather then later, so hopefully, we can take care of what we need to,” he said.

The Rockingham Flames will take on the East Perth Eagles in Round 9 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex on June 11.
