E-scooter riders worry about car doors opening in their path as push increases for safe driving practices

E-scooter riders have highlighted having an unexpected car door open as their biggest safety fear in a national survey. According to research by Neuron Mobility, car doors opening in the path of an e-scooter rider — or “dooring” — was listed as a major hazard. An 82-year-old woman died after she crashed into a car door while riding an e-bike in Busselton in April. Almost 45 per cent of e-scooter riders said they feared “dooring”, while 36 per cent worried about cars overtaking them too closely or too quickly. The quality of the road was also a worry, with 35 per cent concerned about potholes and poor road surfaces on their travels. Other concerns included vehicles pulling out of driveways, drivers turning at intersections without watching out for riders and pedestrians stepping into their path. The research was released at the start of Road Safety Week, with both drivers and riders urged to focus on safe practices. Australian Road Safety Foundation founder and chief executive officer Russell White said riders and drivers could contribute to improved road safety. “Far too many vulnerable road users are injured or killed on our roads due to avoidable collisions,” he said. “Greater awareness and education among both riders and drivers are key to making our roads safer and preventing tragedies.” Riders have been urged to take safety into their own hands when they ride, with users recommended to wear bright gear along with a mandatory helmet. Users should also use lights, especially at night, as well as ride predictably and at least a door’s width from parked vehicles. Drivers of vehicles have also been asked to leave at least one metre of space in residential areas and 1.5m on roads with a speed limit of more than 60km/h. Drivers should also check their blind spots and remain patient when driving around e-scooters. Neuron Mobility Australia and New Zealand general manager Jayden Bryant said there were some simple actions that could improve safety. “Road Safety Week is the perfect time to remind drivers that small actions — like giving riders space and checking blind spots — can make a big difference,” he said. “Our e-scooters are built for safety but it’s up to all road users to play their part in creating safer streets.” A number of local governments across WA have deals to allow Neuron e-scooters in their areas. They includes the City of Perth and the City of Vincent in the State’s capital, as well as the popular tourist destination of Busselton. A number of areas including parts of the City of Stirling, the City of Perth and WA’s biggest regional city of Bunbury have signed deals with e-scooter provider Beam Mobility.
