The future of the critically acclaimed ABC series The Heights is in doubt.

While the second season is currently screening, it has not yet been green-lit to continue, leaving fans of the show being urged to appeal for its continuation.

Earlier this month the show’s official Twitter page posted: “The Heights hasn’t been renewed for a third season and we’re not sure if it will.”

Co-creator Que Minh Luu — who was recently appointed the director of local originals for streaming giant Netflix — tweeted it was “a pretty sad end if true”.

“The Heights was such a well written, lovingly made show, with so much to offer audiences and the industry at large.”

The series, which is filmed in Perth, centres on the inner-city neighbourhood of Arcadia Heights, and explores the relationships between the residents of the Arcadia social housing tower and the people who live in the rapidly gentrifying community that surrounds it.

The series presents a medley of characters, cultures, classes and backgrounds from the community and explores the relationships, work lives and everyday challenges faced by its characters.

In the first series, one third of the main ensemble cast comprised actors in their first screen roles, while two thirds of the main cast were from under-represented backgrounds.

The Heights has been celebrated for its diversity of casting and reflecting the melting pot of modern Australia.

There was also a 50 per cent gender parity among the cast and crew, including heads of department, and four episodes came from writers who were receiving their first screen credits.

The ensemble cast features actors including Shari Sebbens, Roz Hammond, Kelton Pell, Phoenix Raei and Carina Hoang.

Earlier this year the series was picked up by the BBC and aired in the United Kingdom in June.

The second season was shown straight after, with some episodes screening there before they had even aired here.

The Heights has been celebrated for its diversity of casting and reflecting the melting pot of modern Australia.

It also provides a huge boost to the WA television industry, with the entire production and post-production pathway for the series undertaken locally.

The second season was filmed in Perth between August and December 2019 and engaged about 120 local crew, as well as 90 speaking and extra roles in the cast.
