A mother and three children have been found dead in a home in Melbourne’s northwest.

Police were met at the home in Burgess Street, Tullamarine by paramedics and a man believed to be the husband and father of those found inside the property.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said officers cannot afford to make assumptions in the case.

“These people died in suspicious circumstances,” he said.

“We should not draw any conclusions at this time the fact that we have a male assisting us. We have a long way to go before we can actually understand and appreciate what occurred.”

He said the man, who is understood to have made the call for help, was a person of interest and is assisting police.

A murder-suicide is also one avenue being investigated.

Police are not looking for any other person, and said there is no risk to the community. There was no history of family violence involving the family.

Mr Hill noted it was the second event in a week involving the loss of children in horrific circumstances.

It would impact the local community and police who attended the scene.

“We will be supported by our specialists within the welfare unit of Victoria Police,” he said.

“We will also provide support for the broader family members that have no doubt suffered significant emotional loss as a consequence of this event.”
