An Australian woman has been seriously injured after a scooter accident on a remote island off Bali, prompting an evacuation to the mainland after she suffered ‘significant’ blood loss.
Amy Donohue, who hails from Queensland, was travelling as a passenger on a scooter on a remote island off Bali when the scooter lost balance, crushing her leg.
“The scooter and foot pedal landed on my leg, causing a very serious wound and significant blood loss,” Ms Donahue said in an Instagram post.
“My friends immediately stepped in and applied a tourniquet while we waited for an ambulance.”
Ms Donohue was rushed to mainland Bali and her friends set up a GoFundMe to get her home to Australia, although it was later revealed she had travel insurance.
“Because we were on a remote island, the local hospital simply didn’t have the facilities to deal with an injury of that severity,” she said.
“I needed to be urgently evacuated to the mainland for treatment.”
The massage therapist stressed she wasn’t “just another ‘idiot in Bali’”, shooting down reporting that she was on a “week-long bender” on the holiday island.
“I wasn’t riding recklessly. I wasn’t without a helmet. I wasn’t uninsured,” she said.
“This was a genuine accident.
“There were no posts on my Instagram showing a week of partying or drinking, and no one had made comments on my Instagram about a week-long bender.
“I just think it’s important to distinguish between what actually happened and what has been assumed or sensationalised.”
She also paid tribute to the group of friends who worked to get her back to Australia while she was lying in hospital “heavily medicated” and in “considerable pain”.
“I’m grateful to every single person who helped me through the scariest experience of my life — especially my friends who acted so quickly when I couldn’t act for myself,” she said.
“I’m home now, and my focus is on healing, recovering and getting stronger every day.”
