Peak-hour commuters are being warned of traffic chaos after a driver was critically hurt in a crash — forcing the closure of Tonkin Highway northbound.

The crash was reported after 6am on Friday, with multiple ambulance crews and police officers on the scene.

St John WA said a man was being treated for critical injuries.

Tonkin Highway northbound, spanning between the suburbs of Martin and Maddington, has been closed between Mills Road West and Gosnells Road West.

Commuters are urged to consider exiting the freeway at Corfield Street or Albany Highway to avoid congestion.

Traffic remains heavy and is backed up to Corfield Street in Gosnells.
