An oil spill on a busy WA highway caused chaos for commuters on Friday morning.

The spill occurred on Great Eastern Highway westbound at Scott Street in Greenmount about 7.51am.

Main Roads confirmed the left lane was still closed at 9.40am and traffic is slow on approach.

Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution in the area.

It wasn’t the only incident causing mayhem on WA roads.

Vehicle breakdowns on Murdoch Drive, Wanneroo Road and the South Street entry ramp to Kwinana Freeway caused delays for people trying to go to work during peak hour.
