Peak hour commuters were warned to brace for heavy delays after a barrier at the entrance of the Northbridge tunnel was spotted “hanging” above cars on Tuesday afternoon.

The eastbound entrance to the tunnel on the Graham Farmer Freeway was congested while emergency works were underway on the barrier, which was first reported hanging about 2.40pm.

The right lanes of the entrance were closed, with incident response crews trying to make the area safe. Main Roads said the barrier had been repaired just after 4.30pm.

The works on the barrier took several hours, with traffic remaining slow on approach.
