An abandoned car left totalled in the middle of Mitchell Freeway caused traffic chaos for morning commuters on Tuesday.

Motorists heading southbound on the busy freeway at Karrinyup Road were reduced to two lanes during peak hour traffic, after reports a car — which looked to be rear-ended — was left on the road before 6am.

Police were unable to confirm details surrounding the crash but for over an hour emergency services and traffic management were working to clear the car.

The crash was cleared around 6.55am, but traffic still remains heavy on approach.

The centre and right lanes were blocked, causing traffic to bank up in the area.

Main Roads WA tweeted the crash warning motorists that traffic is heavy in the area and to find an alternate route.

Traffic was bumper-to-bumper all the way back to Ocean Reef Road.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution and allow for extra travel time.
