Young ‘hit-and-run’ victim Iziah Jordan Hayward refused bail after breaking curfew to “drink with friends”

A young man who was last year fighting for his life after a hit-and-run is now in jail after breaching his curfew to “drink with some friends”, while the man charged with trying to kill him faces court later this month. Police allege that on October 27 last year Iziah Jordan Hayward, then 19, was knocked down, dragged and reversed over by Andrew Robert Rankin, 39, of Medina, and that Mr Rankin left the teenager to die on a Wellard road. Mr Hayward, pictured, was left in ICU and suffered bleeding on the brain, a fractured pelvis and multiple spinal injuries. Doctors were unsure if he would ever be able to walk again. But Mr Hayward himself is now behind bars after breaching his curfew last week to have drinks at the pub with friends. He is facing charges including home burglary, attempted stealing, three counts of stealing, four counts of possession of stolen property, and nine counts of gains benefit by fraud. Some of the charges are said to have happened before the crash and some since. Mr Hayward appeared in custody at Rockingham Magistrates Court last week after he was arrested for failing to abide by his 7pm-9am curfew. Police prosecutor Sgt Naomi Foster said police arrived at Mr Hayward’s home in Wellard at 10.23pm on September 7 to do the check when his mother allegedly told police “he wasn’t home”. Sgt Foster said Mr Hayward was arrested at his home the following morning and taken to Rockingham court. Magistrate Vivien Edwards asked the accused why he wasn’t at his address at the time of his curfew and he said, “I was at the pub drinking with some friends and didn’t see the time”. Mr Hayward begged the magistrate to let him out on bail again telling her, “I’m sick, man I’m f...... sick, you can’t do this”. Sgt Foster said she was opposed to bail as Mr Hayward was “very likely” to reoffend as he has “172 criminal outcomes” and the “protection of the community was greater than his want for bail”. Ms Edwards agreed and remanded him in custody until his District Court hearing on September 20. Meanwhile, Mr Hayward’s alleged attacker Mr Rankin is facing six charges including attempting to unlawfully kill, failing to stop and ensure assistance and using an unlicensed vehicle on a road. He is yet to enter pleas and is set to face Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on September 29.
