Winners of the City of Rockingham’s Breakthrough Music Competition announced

The final for the City of Rockingham’s 2021 Breakthrough Music Competition was held on November 28, with a line-up of talented young performers taking to the stage at The Lookout on the Rockingham Foreshore.

Breakthrough is held annually for young people aged 12 to 24 and gives them an opportunity to showcase their musical talent.

Participants in this year’s competition could win cash prizes up to $1000, as well as studio recording, video and photoshoot opportunities, and free music lessons.

Seventeen contestants competed in this year’s final, with performers vying for prizes in the junior division for kids ages 12 to 16, senior division for people aged 17 to 24 and the all-new band division.

Luke Newman won the competition’s junior division, Romy B the senior division and Fox India was the inaugural winner of the band division.

The competition this year was judged by Jordan Anthony and Nikki D’Agostino, with Eskimo Joe’s Kav Temperley a special guest judge for the final.

Rockingham mayor Deb Hamblin congratulated the winners.

“The Breakthrough Music Competition is a potential pathway for those seeking to develop a career in the music industry and showcases some of the outstanding musical talent in our community,” Ms Hamblin said.

“The calibre of talent in this year’s competition was extremely high and all contestants should be proud of their efforts. Each year the City is thrilled to be able to offer this musical opportunity to young people and we congratulate the winners in their respective categories.”

Before the final, performers had to navigate a series of heats which were held at the Rockingham Youth Centre, Stockland Baldivis Shopping Centre and Secret Harbour Square Shopping Centre.
