Warnbro Primary School hosts upcycling fair to promote sustainability at school

It was an exciting day at Warnbro Primary School last Wednesday as the school hosted its second STEM fair celebration, with this year’s focus on sustainability and upcycling. Throughout the semester, students participated in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning with a focus on sustainability and upcycling. Students from years 1-6 created a range of products from reusable materials to sell at stalls as part of the STEM Fair celebrations, including key rings, wool toys, pot plants, picture frames and more. At the school assembly, a representative from each class presented there projects with a slideshow and explained how they constructed their upcycle design project. Parents, carers and families were invited to attend the fair, with items available for purchase from 50 cents to $4. STEM takes traditional science and maths education and shows students how scientific methods can be applied to everyday life, teaching students to apply real-world problem solving skills. Warnbro Primary School deputy principal Clint McNerney said the stalls were a great success. “Everyone thought the creations were outstanding, parents commented on the uniqueness of upcycled products and the organisation of the STEM fair,” he said. “All stalls had great success with their products being sold. There were even interactive activities including a trampoline challenge, mini toys, binary keyrings and popcorn. “This year, the focus was still around sustainability like last year but how, through STEM, students and staff could create products to be sold at the fair.”
