Nominations open for 2023 City of Rockingham Sports Star Awards

Five new awards are on offer at this year’s City of Rockingham Sports Star Awards, including recognition for the region’s top Indigenous athlete, junior volunteer and inclusion program. In all, 12 awards will be presented at this year’s annual awards ceremony held at the Gary Holland Community Centre highlighted by the Junior Sports Star and Senior Star titles. Last year State and national BMX winner Declan McGhee won the junior award. He also scored two podium finishes at the UCI BMX World Championships representing Australia. Rockingham’s Senior Sports Star of the Year Ashlyn Mohr represented Australia at tenpin bowling’s IBF Under 21 World Championships, and is now a US college athlete having secured a sporting scholarship. Other new categories this year will honour an older athlete as the masters sports star and a local club’s governance. Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin encouraged people to nominate their deserving sporting clubs, athletes and volunteers. “Sport and recreation plays a significant role in maintaining the mental and physical health of our community, and throughout the city, we have a number of talented athletes, successful clubs and committed volunteers who should be celebrated for their efforts,” she said.
