New $1.45 million dollar seawall installed to protect Cape Peron against coastal erosion

A new 180-metre seawall has been installed at popular Rockingham headland Cape Peron to protect the area from coastal erosion. The $1.45 million project was partly funded by the McGowan Government’s WA Recovery Plan and created dozens of jobs during its design and construction. More than 9,000 tonnes of locally sourced limestone was used to replace the original wall, which had partly collapsed over time and posed a risk to visitors. Premier Mark McGowan said the project was money well spent. “Cape Peron is well-loved by generations of West Australians and it’s fantastic to see another WA Recovery Fund project completed, creating local jobs and protecting our environment,” he said. “Cape Peron holds historical significance for our State, having played an important role in protecting the WA coast during World War II. “It is only fair we now protect the area from storms and erosion, so it can continue to be safely enjoyed by the community for years to come.” The updated seawall was designed by local company BMT Consulting and constructed by WA Limestone to cope with rising sea levels and the force of the waves, protecting the pathway and sand dunes. Cape Peron is part of Rockingham Lakes Regional Parks, which attracts more than 600,000 visits per year. Environment Minister Reece Whitby said the new seawall will not only protect the Cape Peron coastline, but ensure the safety of visitors “exploring our natural wonders”. “It’s an aquatic playground home to a wide variety of native animals and marine life, and this will reduce the erosion risk,” he said. “Locals and visitors can now enjoy safely walking and cycling along the pathways, knowing the coastline has been stabilised and protected.”
