A tongue-in-cheek joke intended to celebrate the opening of WA’s border has turned into a much-needed flood relief donation. Earlier this week, mattress and furniture company Koala renamed their cushy sofa bed the McGowan Sofa Bed after WA Premier Mark McGowan. “We were just having a think about how great it is that Perth’s welcoming people into the State again, so we thought we would have some fun with our sofa bed,” Senior Marketing Manager at Koala Myles Thomas said. “So we renamed the sofa bed the McGowan Sofa because just like Mark, the sofa withstands a lot of pressure, and it’s extremely welcoming when open. When asked about the sofa at a press conference, Mr McGowan quipped: “You’d think they’d give me one as a sort of promotional opportunity, wouldn’t you?” The Premier’s wish soon became Koala’s command, with the company hand-delivering a McGowan Sofa to his Rockingham electorate office. Mr Thomas flew in from Sydney on Friday to make the delivery, but things did not quite go to plan at Mr McGowan’s Rockingham electorate office with the Premier flying to NSW and his office being closed to visitors due to security threats. After a quick call, a spokesperson for the State Government said while the Premier is “grateful”, he was “unable to accept”. However, they encouraged Koala to donate the sofa to those impacted by the devastating floods in Northern NSW. Mr Thomas said the sofa bed would be donated alongside mattresses already set aside for flood victims.
