Jamie Robbin Weston: Mandurah tradie fined for carrying out Port Kennedy painting jobs without a registration

A Mandurah tradie has been fined after carrying out work while unregistered. Jamie Robbin Weston was sentenced in Rockingham Magistrates Court last month after pleading guilty to two offences under the Building Services (Registration) Act. He was fined $3500 and ordered to pay more than $500 in costs. According to Building and Energy, which prosecuted the Mandurah man, Weston carried out two painting jobs — valued at $2200 and $6550 respectively — at a Port Kennedy property in 2021. The court was told he was previously a registered painter but his registration had expired in 2015. Building Commissioner Saj Abdoolakhan said only registered painting contractors could undertake paid painting work valued at $1000 or more and encouraged homeowners to check a painter’s registration card or carry out a licence search online. “Registration aims to protect consumers by ensuring a painter has the appropriate qualifications and experience to take on the project, as well as being a fit and proper person,” Mr Abdoolakhan said. “In this case, the person was previously registered and aware of the rules and regulations. “These offences put consumers at risk and are unfair to those painters who have worked hard to obtain and maintain their registration.” A licence search can be done via dmirs.wa.gov.au or the Service WA app.
