Mandurah District Police encourage community to help prevent petty theft from cars

Mandurah District Police is urging the public to be vigilant after an influx of people reporting thefts from their cars.

Police are reminding locals that crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility and they can help by removing the temptation for others to commit opportunistic offences.

“Unfortunately, some individuals in our community feel they have a right to your property,” a police spokesperson said.

“They will break into your car, or smash windows, to take items, even just a few coins.”

According to the WA Police Force Crime Statistics, there were 224 reports of stealing in Halls Head alone from 2021-2022, up from 190 in the 2020-2021 financial year.

To avoid being the victim of theft, here’s a few guidelines you can follow:

• When out and about or parked in a driveway, ensure you lock your vehicle and remove any valuables from the inside;
• Lock your home and keep the garage door down;
• Be mindful or your neighbours and communicate with them if you plan to go away on holiday or leave you home vacant.

Most importantly, report any suspicious behaviour to police by calling 131 444 and dial 000 in an emergency.
