Greener future taking shape in City of Rockingham’s latest sustainability snapshot report

The City of Rockingham has released its fifth annual sustainability snapshot report, highlighting the progress it has made towards a more sustainable future. The report captures data and information from six focus areas: water, waste and recycling, energy and emissions, nature and environment, environmental education and engagement, and climate response. Within the past year the city has installed 500 solar panels at various facilities, collected more than 20 tonnes of e-waste and been endorsed for the third time as a gold waterwise council. About 101,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent was captured from decomposing waste at the city’s Millar Road landfill facility, with the excess methane converted into electricity via gas capture. Seven coastal monitoring surveys were held across five locations to monitor changes in the coastline and 11,000 seedlings were provided to residents as part of the city’s native plants giveaway. The seedlings are intended to increase native vegetation and support more water resilient gardens while encouraging community involvement in urban greening. The city’s libraries also hosted 32 sustainability related workshops to further help educate people on environmental issues. Rockingham mayor Deb Hamblin said the sustainability snapshot report was integral to delivering the actions included in the city’s sustainability strategy. “Planning for future generations is a key aspiration in the city’s strategic community plan and addressing issues relating to climate change, the environment, as well as providing sustainable waste and energy solutions, are part of our community’s vision for the future,” she said. “The sustainability snapshot report informs the city’s pursuit of this vision and sets out the tangible steps we’ve taken, as well as providing guidance of the progress we still need to take to fulfil these targets.” To check out the sustainability snapshot report for 2021, visit rockingham.wa.gov.au.
