Dylan John Brahim sentenced for threatening ex-partner with a tomahawk

A man in Perth’s southern suburbs will serve a suspended jail sentence after threatening his ex-partner with a tomahawk in a drug and alcohol-fuelled incident the magistrate labelled “utterly unacceptable”. Dylan John Brahim, 31, appeared via video link before Rockingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to one count of breach of bail, being armed to cause fear and threat to unlawfully do an act. It is understood the breach of bail is in relation to another matter currently before the courts. Prosecutor Sgt Scott Andrews told the court about 7.40am on November 21, 2022, Brahim sent threatening text messages to the owner of a home in Warnbro after finding out his ex-partner and two children had been at the home. In the text messages, Brahim threatened to “flog” his ex-partner. He then attended the Warnbro address with a friend and, while standing out the front of the home, pulled out a tomahawk from the waistband of his pants and began waving it around. Brahim stood out the front of the house yelling at the victim to bring his kids out or else he was going to start smashing windows of the other vehicles parked in the driveway. He continued to wave the tomahawk around for several minutes before leaving the address. When questioned by police, his explanation was that he had wanted to see his kids. Brahim’s lawyer Margot Perling said that Brahim had driven past the Warnbro address the day before and had seen his two children playing outside in the front yard. “He went home and had consumed meth and alcohol before getting a friend to drive him to the address the next morning,” Ms Perling said. “(Brahim) had sent messages to the occupier of the house because he was concerned about the welfare of his kids, however realises that he should have contacted the police to do a welfare check on his behalf. “The address was owned by a dealer that (Brahim) and his former partner would frequently visit.” Ms Perling said that Brahim had been a meth user for about eight years and that despite this he had been a productive member of the community, working and being the main provider for his family. “While in custody (Brahim) was served with a five-year restraining order against (him) with regards to the children and missed the deadline to appeal the decision,” Ms Perling said. The lawyer said that Brahim’s time in custody has been a “turning point” for him to “sort his life out” and the “biggest mistake of his life”. Magistrate Janelle Scutt said that this level of “family violence is utterly unacceptable”. Ms Scutt took into consideration that this behaviour was out of character for Brahim and that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol but maintained that this was no excuse.
