Dwi Pratiwi Nur Cahya remorseful for actions following assault on husband

The lawyer of a Baldivis woman says she is “remorseful” for her actions following an assault on her husband after a heated argument about a life insurance policy left him with serious cuts and bruises. Dwi Pratiwi Nur Cahya, 33, appeared in Rockingham Magistrates Court on Friday, pleading guilty to one count of unlawful assault. Prosecutor Sen. Const. Jessica Anderson told the court that on January 28, about 6pm, Cahya and her husband became involved in a verbal argument while at their home in Baldivis. Cahya had become upset with the victim as he did not want to discuss or make inquiries with regards to a life insurance policy for the couple. The argument continued to escalate between the couple, with Cahya throwing various items throughout the home including knives and glassware. The victim pleaded for Cahya to stop and she continued to shout “divorce me, divorce me”. She then slapped the victim to the right side of the face. She pushed the victim and the victim pushed back. While trying to restrain Cahya the victim lost his balance causing him to fall to the ground. About 11.30pm, Cahya and the victim retired to separate rooms. The victim sustained several visible injuries including bruises to the lower back and cuts to his right leg. Ms Anderson said the victim had since written to the court and expressed that he wanted to reconcile with Cahya. Lawyer Lauren Miranda said that Cahya was “extremely ashamed and remorseful of her actions”. Ms Miranda said the couple met four years ago while on holiday in Bali, becoming involved in a long-distance relationship. Cahya moved from Indonesia to Perth to marry the victim. Ms Miranda said that when Cahya moved to Perth, she found out that the victim had been “lying about being faithful to her”. “She was going to leave the victim, but his parents wanted the couple to reconcile and the Muslim religion is strongly about forgiveness and she still loved him,” she said. Ms Miranda said that there were marital issues very early on in the relationship and on numerous occasions the victim would disappear, sometimes for up to 10 days at a time. “He would change the pin to their bank cards, so that she couldn’t use them,” she said. “(Cahya) would also find numbers used for phone sex and he would send money to other lovers. “Up until recently, she was the only one working and was scared that if something happened (to the victim), she would be left with nothing. “She has no support or family here. “The intricacies that she has been having in her marriage is no excuse. “She has no prior record and is unlikely to offend again. “She wants to get help and attend counselling.” Magistrate Anne Longden said that this was a “serious offence”, however understood the “difficult circumstance” and her “vulnerability” being away from home. Ms Longden said that she hoped with “some support within the community”, this would not happen again.
