Cooloongup man Craig Andrew McMullan charged with assault on 69-year-old mother

A Cooloongup man has admitted in court to a violent assault on his 69-year-old mother last year. Craig Andrew McMullan faced Rockingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday, May 4, where he admitted assaulting his mother at her home. Sen. Const. Anderson said McMullan had been out drinking between December 25 and 26 and returned to the family home heavily intoxicated. It was alleged that upon entering the home McMullan approached the victim and slapped her twice. The victim was later asleep in bed when McMullan came to her bedroom wanting to talk. When the victim declined he punched her left eye, which caused significant bruising. The victim was also grabbed by the throat and had a pillow held to her face, with McMullan allegedly yelling words similar to “I could kill you...”. When police arrived and questioned McMullan, he declined to comment. The duty lawyer for McMullan said alcohol abuse had played a role in the incident, with the accused “lacking self-awareness” and “self-sabotaging”. McMullan had begun to admit and address this issue. Magistrate Vivien Edwards said this incident would have been “terrifying” and “particularly distressing” for the victim.
