City of Rockingham opens its first Changing Places facility for people with disabilities at Churchill Park

A facility designed specifically for people with disabilities has opened on the Rockingham foreshore. The City of Rockingham’s Changing Places facility at Churchill Park features a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, a ceiling track hoist system, shower, toilet and additional circulation space for people with complex disabilities. A master locksmiths access key is required to enter and while most people who need to use the change rooms will have their own key, it can be borrowed from the city or Cruising Yacht Club of WA for a single use. Rockingham mayor Deb Hamblin said the facility was a key element of the access and inclusion upgrades at the foreshore designed to help more people enjoy Rockingham’s beach, park, speciality shopping and entertainment precinct. “The Changing Places will help many more people connect with this beautiful location, and with other people, by giving them the opportunity to come out and participate in events and activities that would otherwise have been out of reach,” she said. The need for the facility was identified as a high priority in the city’s disability access and inclusion plan and the Department of Communities provided $150,000 towards the project.
