The City of Rockingham has accepted a tender for the Karnup district structure plan.

Development plans for the area will now be designed by CDP Town Planning and Urban Design, including planning documents that coordinate zoning, subdivision and land use.

The Karnup district structure plan covers about 2000ha extending from Sixty Eight Road in the north to Paganoni Road in the south, from Mandurah Road/Stakehill Road/Fletcher Road in the west and to Baldivis Road/Stakehill Road and Kwinana Freeway in the east.

The area has been identified for future urban development in strategic plans since the 1980s. The State Government’s plan for future growth in the South metropolitan Peel sub-regional planning framework has identified Karnup as a key future urban growth corridor.

The structure plan will guide the long-term planning of the area, including the location of future activity centres and employment, residential areas and density targets, regional and district infrastructure, schools, public open space, road networks and the integration of public transport.

Mayor Deb Hamblin said planning for future generations was a vital part of the city’s strategic community plan.

“The preparation of the Karnup district structure plan is a vital step in shaping the future of our southern suburbs,” she said.

Ms Hamblin said the plan would include strategies, policies and studies prepared by the city and the State, with residents able to give feedback as it progresses.
