City of Rockingham and WA Police call on residents to do their bit in helping keep community safe

Rockingham residents are being urged to report offences promptly and add their home security cameras to a State database in an effort to combat crime. City of Rockingham mayor Deb Hamblin and chief executive Michael Parker recently met Rockingham police station officer-in-charge Scott Starkie, who took charge of the station in June, to reinforce efforts in maintaining community safety. Ms Hamblin said residents’ feedback during development of the city’s strategic community plan prioritised creating a “family friendly, safe and connected community”. “Working closely with WA Police helps us move continually towards that goal, so we were very pleased to meet Scott and talk about some of the things that concern our residents,” she said. “For some time now we have been encouraging people to report incidents, because if they aren’t reported police can’t provide any help and valuable information that helps fill in the details for other related crimes may be lost.” WA Police has full access to the city’s CCTV camera network so police officers can view incidents in live time, review video of reported incidents and download it as evidence. The city is also encouraging residents to register their own security cameras on Cam-Map WA, which Sgt Starkie said was a comprehensive database of voluntarily registered CCTV systems across WA. “Cam-Map WA is a publicly accessed platform which allows owners and operators of CCTV systems to self-register onto a secure database operated by WA Police,” he said. “Accurate knowledge of the locations of CCTV systems will assist us to investigate incidents in order to improve community safety.” The city and police are also urging residents to remove valuables from vehicles and ensure vehicles, garages and houses are locked to limit the opportunity for thieves.
