City of Kwinana scholarships help more students attend WA’s biggest STEM conference

More than 100 students from nine schools will attend a State STEM conference this month thanks to scholarships from the City of Kwinana. The scholarships will enable 132 students to attend the It Takes a Spark! STEM conference on September 18 at Peter Carnley Anglican Community School in Wellard. Mayor Peter Feasey said five Kwinana schools were previously involved in the event. “More local students will now be exposed to a leading STEM education event as a result of this support from the city,” he said. “The scholarship amount provided by the city of $4400 includes the registrations of the 132 students, and 15 teachers and one EA to attend with their students. “The day will include plenty of hands-on activities and stimulating problems to solve including real-life design challenges and masterclasses for teachers. “We are thrilled more local students in years 4 to 10 have the opportunity to delve deep into the fascinating world of science, technology, engineering and maths in September.” Peter Carnley Anglican Community School principal Felicity House said the school was proud to host WA’s largest STEM in Education conference for the third consecutive year. “As a dynamic, flourishing school with strong connections to the Kwinana Industries Council, we have an engaging technologies program, including a specialist robotics courses,” Ms House said. “The It Takes a Spark! conference provides educators and students from around WA the opportunity to experience cutting-edge STEM activities, speakers and workshops on the grounds of our beautiful Wellard campus.”
