Broman Hape sentenced for violent assault on ex-partner

A Rockingham man has been dealt an extended imprisonment sentence following pleas of guilt to assaulting his ex-partner.

Broman Hape, 32, appearing via video link faced Rockingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 13, where he pleaded guilty to a string of offences including three assault charges.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Mick Fallows told the court on June 26, 2021, Hape and his ex-partner had caught the train to Perth CBD, on arrival the pair had gotten into a violent argument, with Hape grabbing the victim’s neck and striking her in the face.

The pair separated and the victim went to look for police assistance. Following the incident, the victim received a small amount of hair loss and swelling to the back of the head.

On August 28, 2021, Hape was at the victim’s home when the two had gotten into an argument over a missing passport.

The victim went to the bedroom with Hape following behind her, he then proceeded to pin the victim down on to the bed, placing two hands on her throat, where he applied pressure causing the victim to pass out.

A few days later on August 31, 2021, between 3.30 pm and 11.59 pm the victim had threatened to leave the victim and again Hape pulled the victim by the hair, punched her in the jaw, grabbed the victim’s right hand and twisted it behind her back and punching her left arm.

The victim left the bedroom and walked into the kitchen when Hape flipped a table, which hit the victim’s right eye.

The assault continued with Hape hitting the victim multiple times to her neck and chest until he left the home.

The victim followed and the assault continued outside of Rockingham shopping centre, as Hape pushed the victim’s head against a pole causing her to fall over. He again punched the victim causing a cut to her right eye and a bruise to her left eye.

The victim reported the incident to police and Hape was brought to Rockingham Police Station for questioning where he made partial admissions to the incident.

Hape was later arrested on September 1, 2021, and has been serving time in custody at Albany prison.

Hape’s lawyer Peng Chong said that the relationship between the two was physically abusive on both sides and involved drug use.

“Some people are not meant to be in a relationship and this is an example of that,” she said.

“The victim has since written to the accused on numerous occasions, but he has no intention of re-engaging with that relationship.”

Magistrate Vivien Edwards sentenced Hape to a 17-month term of imprisonment with time in custody considered and ordered to pay $134.50 in court costs.
