Safety Bay kiteboarder Hughes sails to Leighton success
Safety Bay kiteboarder Rachael Hughes was the first female across the line at the Lighthouse to Leighton on December 8.
It was Hughes’ fourth attempt at the annual race, which runs from Rottnest Island to Leighton Beach in Fremantle, and while she placed second last year and first in 2016 in the twin tip category, she was still surprised with her win.
“It’s a really great race, really fun. I wasn’t expecting to win. It’s always a toss-up which kite you’re going to race with, so there is some luck involved too,” she said.
“The wind was pretty good the whole way across; I got in the shadow of one of the ships out there for a bit but was OK the rest of the race.”
Hughes claimed the women’s twin tip race in a time of 31min.10sec, ahead of Cristina Gauderi in 32min.56sec and Kathryn Davies in 33min.
A new race record was set by 19-year-old Guy Bridge, with the young Englishman smashing the race record to finish the 19km crossing in just 18min.49sec.
A total of 135 kiteboarders from all over the world took part in the race in perfect kiteboarding conditions.
