Rotary aids sports clubs with grants

Rockingham Rotary Club has awarded multiple sporting clubs across the district with funding, to help them out with buying new equipment, uniforms and more.

More than $23,000 was handed out this year through the Rotary club’s annual sporting club grants across nine sports clubs.

Shoalwater Cricket Club were one of the nine clubs to receive funding and was granted $900, which volunteer and club treasurer Rebecca Richards said would be used to grow their club.

“I thought we had missed the cut-off date but because of coronavirus it was extended,” she said.

“It is going to make such a huge difference for us, we are hoping to have three ladies’ teams next season, we had two this season which was so much fun.

“We also need other items like first-aid stuff and new cricket equipment, we have had a lot of our cricket gear for many, many years.”

Ms Richards said the club also tried to supply some of their players with cricket equipment.

“We try and provide at least one bag of equipment per team that we have, we have a senior team for every grade which is A through to F, and then we have a junior team from under 10 up to under 17,” she said.

“This grant is really going to have a huge impact and I am really excited about it, we are so thankful, it is awesome Rotary has grants like this to help clubs around the area.”

Rockingham Rotary Club member Tracey Scott was the one to tell Shoalwater Cricket Club they were successful grant applicants.

“How much we offer through these grants varies each year, there is a lot of applicants each time so we have a community director and a committee who pick the clubs and decide how much to give them,” she said.

Several of the cheques were presented to clubs last week and the remainder will be handed out over the course of this week.
