The cities of Rockingham and Kwinana have big plans in the pipeline for 2020, with different projects aimed at benefiting many different areas.

Rockingham and Kwinana areas are growing fast, both in population and infrastructure.

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the City would press ahead with several projects, the largest being the Baldivis District Sporting Complex.

“The BDSC will allow the City to address a significant shortage of active reserve space in Baldivis for present and future sporting groups as the Baldivis community continues to grow,” he said.

“Civil works on the project are expected to begin in February.”

Mr Sammels also said that in 2020 the City would continue to work on the 2020 to 2025 Economic Development Strategy.

“If adopted, this new strategy will aim to encourage a diverse, vibrant, resilient and more balanced local economy that will aim to facilitate jobs growth, and support sustainable economic growth in the city for the next five years,” he said.

“The City will continue to implement the actions outlined in this strategy and we look forward to working with the relevant parties to continue growing tourism in our community and giving visitors plenty of reasons why they should be excited to Rediscover Rockingham.”

Other projects include starting work on the Rockingham Youth Centre, the Port Kennedy Drive Duplication project, expected to be completed in February or March, and the construction of two more boat ramps at Point Peron, also in March.

City of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said there were many plans in place for her electorate, including finding a new chief executive.

“Kwinana is the second-fastest growing local government area, so we are looking to recruit for that unique person to join council and drive the organisation forward,” she said.

“We have also been heavily involved with Westport Taskforce process and have representatives on the various Westport Reference Group.

“We were pleased that five of the options recently announced for the new port are all in Kwinana.

“We are looking forward to really getting behind the State Government and help facilitate economic development, job opportunities and doing every-thing we can to ensure our youth have training opportunities so they are first in line for the many jobs which will flow from such a large infrastructure project.”

Ms Adams said another exciting project beginning in 2020 was the construction of a new school in Wellard.

“This is something the City has strongly advocated for over several years,” she said.

“We are a growth area and it is important for our young to enjoy their schooling in class rooms which are not crowded.

“Another important development is the building of Costco.

“The City has been working for several years with the company and land developer to ensure Costco has a presence south of the river.

“We are confident that with such a significant company establishing at this site, it will attract other new and exciting business opportunities.”
