A shark warning has been issued after a surfer had his board nudged by a 2.5 metre shark at a popular surfing spot near Exmouth on Sunday.

Lighthouse Bay has been closed and fisheries officers have been called in after the incident at the Dunes surfing beach, 20km north of Exmouth.

A member of the public reported that an unknown species of shark had “interacted” with a surfboard at approximately 3pm on Sunday.

The report has been confirmed by officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and is now being investigated further.

DPIRD spokesman Peter Godfrey said the surfer was not hurt during the incident.

“During this interaction the surfer was nudged from his board and minor marks were made to his board,” he said.

DPIRD scientists are examining pictures of the surfboard to try and identified which shark species was involved.

Locals have been advised to follow beach closure advice and be extra cautious in the Lighthouse Bay area.
