A South West conservation group is hoping to shore-up the coastline health with the help of the community. Binningup Coast Care and Environment Group is inviting everyone to help restore Binningup’s beaches, hosting a community planting day at the Binningup foreshore on Sunday. BCEG secretary Jaya Vaughan said everyone was welcome to attend the day and help the group improve the local ecosystem. “Re-establishing vegetation cover over the dunes will reduce exposure to erosion, enhance the diversity of species available for local wildlife and improve aesthetics for the community,” she said. “Leaving the dunes without adequate vegetation cover exposes them to erosion during strong wind events and high tides which can result in blow outs which can be a perpetual threat as they progressively expand in the dunes.” The planting day is entirely funded by the BCEG Ms Vaughan said, though she hopes the group can attract external funding for future revegetation efforts. “This is a great opportunity for people to get involved in a community event to protect the dunes and local environment,” she said. “BCEG strongly believes in local people taking ownership of projects to protect our dunes and environment.” The planting day kicks off at 9am until 12pm at the Binningup boat ramp and there is no need to RSVP.
