Man stuck 65 metres down hole while armed with rocks refused bail on charges including obstructing officers

A 19-year-old who allegedly refused to be rescued after becoming stuck 65m down a hole, triggering a six-hour emergency response mission, has been refused bail. Keithan Xavier Carnegie appeared in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court via video link from a hospital bed while in custody on Thursday, facing three charges including obstructing police officers. It was alleged the man had purposely descended into a deep hole in the ground on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and was armed with rocks when police arrived at the scene to deter them from arresting him. Const. Kim Sullivan told the court Mr Carnegie had got stuck 65m below the surface, which triggered emergency response teams to attend the scene. The court heard Mr Carnegie allegedly refused to comply with Department of Fire and Emergency Service crews, who eventually recovered him after six hours at the scene. Mr Carnegie was also charged with unlawful assault and doing bodily harm with circumstances of aggravation and unlawful wounding after allegedly kicking a man to his stomach and nose, causing four stitches to the lip on November 24, and using a knife to stab a second victim whom he allegedly left lying on the road outside of Menzies on December 8. Magistrate William Yoo told the court Mr Carnegie was an “endangerment” to people and refused to grant him bail. Mr Carnegie will next appear in court in January.
