Karrinyup police incident: Two 18-year-olds in serious but stable condition, two 16-year-olds in custody

Two men are in Royal Perth Hospital tonight in a serious but stable condition after a knife incident that locked down the streets surrounding one of Perth’s biggest shopping centres. According to police the two 18-year-old men were allegedly stabbed at Karrinyup Shopping Centre. Two 16-year-old boys have been taken into custody by police following the incident. Armed police swarmed the neighbourhoods around the shopping complex on Sunday afternoon after reports that a person had been stabbed. The busy shopping precinct was brought to a standstill about 2.40pm as uniformed and plain-clothes police surrounded the area. A witness told 9 News Perth that one of the alleged offenders had been found in his backyard by armed police on Edmondson Street. “When they had their guns drawn… they looked like semi-automatics to me, that’s when I knew something was serious,” the witness said. “It happened so quick.” Police said a witness phoned police to report that a person had been stabbed, and that another member of the public was chasing a person believed to be involved in the vicinity of Jackson Avenue, Karrinyup which runs parallel to the shopping centre. Moments later more calls were made to police about a person who was spotted with a bladed weapon at the shopping precinct on Francis Avenue. “Information was also received from St John WA that they were attending a location on Francis Avenue, Karrinyup in relation to two people believed to have stab wound/laceration related injuries,” police said in a statement. “Several police units including local police, detectives, canine unit and police air wing were deployed to the area, and two people have been taken into custody. “Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding this incident, including where the two people received their injuries are ongoing and at this time “There is no ongoing danger to the community.” Police said one of the teenagers taken into custody was also taken to hospital for treatment to a hand injury. After treatment he was later taken into police custody. As many as six St John WA crews attended the incident. The investigation is continuing.
