Youngster carries baton

Life can throw some pretty stiff challenges at you — but Port Kennedy 10-year-old Jordan Mears is proof that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve your dreams.

Jordan, who faces a daily battle with cystic fibrosis, is one of the youngest people to run in the Queen’s Baton Relay when it passes through Rockingham this week.

Cystic Fibrosis primarily impacts the lungs and digestive system, with people affected developing abnormal amounts of mucus in the lungs, airways and digestive system

Despite her condition, Jordan attacks every day determined to be the best she can, excelling in a number of sports including swimming, synchronised swimming, dancing and gymnastics.

Ahead of the relay, the South Coast Baptist College student told the Telegraph she wanted to take part in the relay to help encourage others.

“I wanted to do it to show people that if you are small, you can still get involved,” Jordan said.

In addition, Jordan said she also hoped to use the relay as a platform to help raise awareness of bullying and to help kids affected by it.

The Queen’s Baton relay will pass through Rockingham on Friday, ahead of its journey to the Gold Coast for the 21st Commonwealth Games that begin on April 4.

Spectators are invited to join in the Community Celebration event at Churchill Park on Rockingham Beach Road from 4.30pm.

There will be live performances, free children’s activities, and a sausage sizzle, with The Queen's Baton expected to arrive from 5.30pm to 6pm.
