Gilmore College hosted an Anzac ceremony on April 11 as students, teachers, parents and special guests reflected on the sacrifice of service men and women past and present.

Kwinana MLA Roger Cook, Brand MHR Madeleine King, Lieutenant Commander David Sutherland from the Royal Australian Navy and Professor and Noongar elder Len Collard were among the special guests at the ceremony.

The event included a flag-raising ceremony, a prayer of remembrance, the laying of wreaths, the playing of The Last Post and poems of commemoration.

Maori students from Years 7-12 performed a Haka called Tika Tonu.

Principal Rohan Smith said the school had a long-standing tradition of paying respect to Anzacs and all service people.

“This (the ceremony) is an excellent opportunity to do that,” he said.

The ceremony was hosted ahead of Anzac Day today, before the school closed for the school holidays.
