A prisoner who called his partner while bound by a violence restraining order has been slammed by a magistrate who called his offending a “brazen” breach of the order.

Adam James Ridgewell pleaded guilty to breaching the order when he appeared in Rockingham Magistrate’s Court last Friday.

The court was told that on January 16, Ridgewell phoned his partner from prison and that they spoke about their relationship. However, he was bound by a VRO in place to protect his partner.

Magistrate Geoff Lawrence labelled the breach “brazen” and criticised Ridgewell’s partner for her role in the offending, as she had allowed her number to be added to the prison’s phone system.

“The person protected went to significant lengths to con the system,” he said.

“Both of you have completely ignored the law.”

Ridgewell was fined $800.
