Toy library reaches 30 years

The much-loved Rockingham and Districts Toy Library celebrated its 30th anniversary last weekend, with the community favourite hosting festivities at its new home in Waikiki.

Now based on Rand Avenue, the RDTL has had a busy start to 2018, with the group capping off its recent move in late December with a “messy play day” on Saturday.

Having spent nearly three years at the Salvation Army premises on Fifty Road, the RDTL was forced to find a new home when the Salvos put its longstanding home up for sale.

Thanks to the efforts of some hardworking volunteers, the group has slipped into its new home at the Waikiki Family and Community Centre with ease.

RDTL president Karen East said the group’s community spirit was a key driver in helping it reach its 30th anniversary milestone.

“The demand is there — it’s never changing,” she said.

“But we are also tapping into other families that may have special needs children, so they’re able to use some of the toys we have here rather than having to purchase all that stuff themselves.”

The RDTL has 57 members, catering for about 80 children, and is growing weekly.
