Top cop Cmdr Mike Bell pleads with WA motorists to change attitudes after horror weekend on roads

WA’s most senior traffic cop and the Premier have pleaded with motorists to change their attitudes after seven more deaths in separate crashes this weekend. Six men and a woman, four of them on motorcycles, died between 5am on Friday and 2pm on Sunday, taking the State’s road toll in 2024 to 173. That puts WA on track for the highest death toll on the roads since 2016, when 195 people perished. Road policing Cmdr Mike Bell fronted the cameras on Sunday to urge road users to slow down and step up their attitudes and behaviours behind the wheel. “The message doesn’t seem to be getting through that road safety is everybody’s responsibility,” he said. “It is strongly suggesting people keep driving thinking this doesn’t pertain to me, but it absolutely does. “I’ve spoken before about the need to change culture and the need for drivers to be responsible for the way they conduct themselves in the car. “We’re running ‘operational regional influence’ into the 400km arc of influence around the the Perth CBD. “Last week alone, in one week, 483 infringements (were handed out) between my police officers and the safety cameras. “Again, it’s telling me the culture isn’t changing. “And so this week we have another six families whose lives have changed, their communities will change, their sporting clubs, their work environments will all change. “We’ll all be grieving these six people.” A 69 year-old man died on Toodyay Road after his Mitsubishi smashed into a Toyota Corolla about 5.15pm on Friday. Then a 27-year-old motorcyclist died when his Yamaha motorcycle crashed with a silver Mercedes in Padbury about 10.45pm. At 8.15am on Saturday, a man in his 30s driving a Toyota Kluger died in the Albany suburb of Lange after the car rolled and caught fire. At 11.40am, a woman in her 50s died after her Holden collided with a Scania truck near Nippering, between Wagin and Dumbleyung. A 64-year-old man died when his Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with a wall and tree on Scotsdale Road near Denmark about 1.10pm. And a a 60-year-old man died when his Harley Davidson motor crashed near Kenmare Avenue in Thornlie about 9pm. And then on Sunday around 1:25pm, police were called to a crash involving a motorcycle on the border of Henty and Ferguson , south-east of Bunbury. A Harley Davidson motorcycle had left the road, had struck a tree and a fence, before coming to rest in a paddock. A man in his 70s, died at the scene. On top of the fatalities, Cmdr Bell revealed that during a targeted 10-hour lockdown operation at Crown Casino over the weekend, police picked up 64 positive breath tests and six positive drug wipes. Last week, in a similar sting in Northbridge, there were 59 positive breath tests and seven positive drug wipes. “That tells me strongly that the culture out there isn’t changing,” Cmdr Bell said. “We’re three weeks out from Christmas and I suspect, unfortunately, more people will be going through this suffering. “And I reflect on how how many of those six people saw my messages. “Where I’ve asked them to be mindful on the roads, to think about speed, fatigue, impaired, distracted, restraint. “Once again, they appear to be represented in all of these crashes, although they’re still under investigation, but early indications are that seems to be the problem.” Premier Roger Cook said road users “have to do everything we can as individuals to make smart choices, to make safe choices”. “I plead, I plead with the people of Western Australia, please do everything you can to keep yourself safe, to keep your family safe and to keep other road users safe,” he said. “There’s a lot of families who won’t be celebrating with one of their friends, one of their family members this Christmas. “And so we just urge everyone, once again, please do everything you can to keep yourself safe.” If you or anyone you know has been affected by a road crash, contact Road Trauma Support WA on 1300 004 814
