Best-selling non-fiction writer Peter FitzSimons will be in Rockingham next week to launch his latest book, which focuses on the incredible story of the Catalpa rescue.

Known for his tomes on various events and periods in Australian history, The Catalpa Rescue is a tale of courage and cunning, the fight for independence and the triumph of good men, against all odds.

Between April 17-19 1876, six Irish Fenian prisoners working in what is now the Rockingham area were rescued by an American ship, who had hatched a plan to save the political prisoners.

As part of the launch of his novel, FitzSimons will take part in the annual service at the Wild Geese memorial from 11am-12pm, and from 12.30pm he will give a short talk on the book before undertaking a book signing.

Books will be on sale by Rockingham Books, who will be at the Hotel Clipper on the day.
