Spark hope at Light the Night walk

The Rockingham community will light the way for families affected by blood cancer by joining the Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night walk on October 21.

Taking part in her second walk this year is Baldivis mother-of-two Ali Plummer.

Mrs Plummer was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in December, 2014.

“When I was initially given the diagnosis I was an emotional wreck,” she said.

“My husband and I were so shocked, and we thought ‘how are we going to survive this journey with two young kids’.”

Mrs Plummer manages her leukaemia with medication and is hoping one day to go into remission.

“It can be hard because it’s not obvious I’ve got cancer because I’m not going through chemo and have those obvious signs,” she said.

“At times it can be quite isolating because no one knows you’re battling it.” For Mrs Plummer, Light the Night provides an opportunity for those battling a blood cancer and their friends and family to support a charity together.

“It’s a good reminder that even though leukaemia can be quite isolating sometimes, there is a lot of support available,” she said.

Light the Night will take place in Churchill Park on October 21 from 5.30pm.
