Silver Chain fundraising group marks five decades

Rockingham Silver Chain Fund-raisers Group is set to celebrate 50 years of raising money and supporting the community on Friday.

Since meeting as a group for the first time in October 1967, Rockingham Silver Chain Fundraisers Group has grown to include about 75 members.

During the past 50 years, the group has helped raise about $700,000 for those in need, with funds going to worthy local causes including the refurbishment of the Respite/Social Centre, on Ray Street, Rockingham, and the provision of nurses and carers for Silver Chain’s clients.

In the build-up to the 50th anniversary celebrations, the group held various fundraising events, including a fashion show on September 28.

Looking ahead, secretary Pat Thomson said the possibilities for the group, especially with the help of new members, were exciting.

“It’s usually geared for seniors because a lot of the seniors are available for the fundraisers on a Friday at 1.30pm, whereas a lot of younger ones are still working, but we still welcome all with open arms,” she said.

The group meets on the second Friday of every month, except January, at the Challenge Court Hall in Rockingham.

New members are welcome.
