Scarifies remembered

RSL’s across the area hosted services on Monday to commemorate members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

Remembrance Day services included many members of the community who wished to pay their respects, with everyone taking part in a minute of silence at 11am.

Totally and Partially Disabled Veterans WA is a voluntary group which paid its respects at the service held in Port Kennedy at the Veterans Memorial Park, organised by the Port Kennedy RSL.

The service also included school choirs singing, a firing of the cannon and speeches from several different people. Afterwards the Totally and Partially Disabled Veterans WA hosted a get-together at their clubhouse which included a sausage sizzle and a drink.

Group president Doug Stevenson said the event was one which held a lot of significance for many people in the voluntary group.

“It is about remembering our fallen comrades and showing respect to the fallen as well as respect to our fathers and grandfathers who went to war before us,” he said

“Our members range from Vietnam, Korean and Afghan veterans, peacekeepers and border patrol as well as any service person and their families and other social members.

“The Rockingham Men’s Shed will also soon be joining us which will build our numbers significantly.”
