Rockingham dog lovers to get new designated parks

Dog-lovers in the City of Rockingham may soon get the chance to take their furry friends out for walks in two more designated dog parks — set to be located in Port Kennedy and Waikiki.

At last week’s council meeting, councillors voted to start community consultation on the selection of two additional dog parks in the area.

Following a study in 2015 that noted there was a need for more dog parks across the area, the City has been investigating options for additional sites.

In that time, two dog parks have been approved in Rockingham and Baldivis.

Two additional sites have now been identified at St Clair Reserve in Port Kennedy and Seahaven Reserve in Waikiki.

In a report to the council, City officers said the provision of additional dog parks would result in several benefits for the Rockingham community and surrounds — specifically an increase in responsible dog ownership, an increase in physical activity, an increase in community socialisation, and an increase in greater dog socialisation.

The two sites were selected for their central and accessible locations, parking options and sizes.

Following the outcome of the consultation process, a further report will be presented to the council providing details of feedback on the proposed sites.
