Ride raises money for headspace

A spark of interest in how long it would take to ride along the freeway has resulted in two Rockingham men to undertake a 14 hour ride, raising money for headspace along the way.

At 6am on November 10, Jake Janzekovic and Jamie Spence took off from Rockingham and spent the day riding down the freeway all the way to Busselton.

Mr Janzekovic said the ride was not without its challenges, including a wrong turn into Mandurah that added around 70 km to their trip.

Deciding to raise money for a charity fuelled their determination to complete the ride, with headspace chosen as it was an organisation both were familiar with.

“Lots of our friends have battled mental illness and we know that headspace is a place that has been a good outlet to help them,” Mr Janzekovic said.

Mr Spence said they thought it would be “nice to give something back” to headspace to show their appreciation for the support provided to their friends.

Despite Mr Spence not having ridden a bike in “around four years”, the men said they managed to push through the physical and mental obstacles they faced during the ride.

Setting up a GoFundMe page and accepting cash donations from friends and family, the men raised $1,900, which they handed over to headspace last week.

Headspace Rockingham centre manager Felicity Sivewright said they were “absolutely thrilled” with the fundraising efforts, which would go towards continuing to assist the wellbeing of young people in the community.
