On November 11, 1918, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, ending World War I after more than four years of bloody conflict.

After accepting the terms presented by the French army, the Germans signed an armistice bringing an end to the war which claimed more than 62,000 Australian lives.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice and in honour of the milestone, Safety Bay Ex-Services and Community Club Inc in conjunction with the City of Rockingham RSL, is hosting an Armistice Ball at the Gary Holland Community Centre on Saturday, November 10.

As part of celebrations, Year 10 students from Comet Bay College have researched and created posters honouring 30 West Australians who served in WWI — some of them from the Rockingham area. The posters will be on display in the Gary Holland Community Centre on the night of the ball and throughout the week including on Remembrance Day.

Veteran and ball steering committee member Mick Ryan said it was important to celebrate the milestone.

“What better way to celebrate (the anniversary of the armistice) than by having a ball?” he said.

“It is a very significant part of Australian military history.

“All gave some and some gave all.

“We will also have a commemorative service on Sunday and are burying a time capsule, which we’re encouraging the city to open up in 50 years time at the 150th anniversary of the armistice.”

Tickets are $55 each and include bubbles and canapes on arrival, a three-course sit-down meal, a WA army band and a cash bar.

Tables of 10 are available and can be bought from Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce, 19 Kent Street from 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday, via email admin@rkcc.org.au or by phoning 9592 3333.
