Red-letter day for game club

Cecilia AllenSound Telegraph

To celebrate 35 years, the Rockingham Scrabble Club is inviting old and new players to a Mad March Hare Tea Party and open day next week.

The club was founded by members of the Australian Scrabble Players Association on March 1, 1983, shortly after Glenys Lawrie founded the association in Western Australia.

Ms Lawrie scattered clubs throughout the State based on the foundation of fun and company.

However for those who wanted to advance in the fun of Scrabble, each club would take turns hosting a tournament for all clubs to attend.

Rockingham Scrabble Club still holds a tournament every October.

Rockingham Scrabble Club president Edith Harrison encouraged new members to join.

“There is a very social side to playing scrabble,” she said.

Club secretary Kim Fielding said Scrabble was also “very good at sharpening the mind”.

The open day and tea party will be held on March 26 between 9.30am and 2.30pm at the Rockingham Bowling Club.
