A Waikiki hairdresser has been nominated as a finalist in the Australian Hair and Fashion Awards WA in the hairdresser of the year category, up against five other nominees.

Mikelah-Jayde Mifsud has worked in the industry for 13 years, starting out when she was just 15 and has owned her own Waikiki, salon, Mikelah-Jayde Studio, for about three years.

She said being nominated in the Australian Hair and Fashion Awards WA had been in her five-year plan and not something she had expected to happen so soon. “To even make it as a finalist has just been a massive achievement and goal of mine,” she said.

“My senior mentor, who I did my apprenticeship with, used to be nominated for awards like this all the time, so that inspired me to aim high too.

“The senior stylist at the salon I did my apprenticeship at has also been nominated this year for the same award and that is kind of a big thing for me as well, to be up against him.”

Ms Mifsud said her application included a six-piece collection, titled Black Out.

“It has been inspired by punk style; I find it very interesting how you can express yourself in such a different way through this style,” she said.

“I sent off my application and they judged the entries, came up with six finalists and then later on this year, the winner will be announced at the awards.”

Ms Mifsud said the best part of her job was getting to transform people and give them the look they really wanted.

“I can change someone’s whole look and persona, which is just really cool. It is why I love hairdressing so much,” she said.
